Abstract
Introduction: In the pathogenesis of some neurological diseases, oxidative/nitration stress may play an important role. In this context, the antioxidant status of blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid and uric acid levels in various neurological diseases were assessed.
Patients and methods: Uric acid in cerebrospinal fluid and serum, antioxidant capacity of cerebrospinal fluid and serum, albumin in cerebrospinal fluid and serum and immunoglobulins in cerebrospinal fluid were determined in groups of patients with multiple sclerosis (n = 296), inflammatory CNS diseases (n = 52), cerebrovascular diseases (n = 112), migraine (n = 47) and nervous system disorders.
Results: In the group of patients with multiple sclerosis, we found a significantly lower level of uric acid in the serum compared to the control group. In patients with inflammatory and cerebrovascular diseases, we found a significantly higher level of uric acid in cerebrospinal fluid compared to the control group. In inflammatory CNS diseases, in patients with vascular brain diseases and non-inflammatory CNS diseases, we did not observe any significant intersex differences in the total antioxidant capacity of serum and cerebrospinal fluid. We found sexual differences in correlations between serum antioxidant capacity and immunoglobulin G parameters in serum and also uric acid in cerebrospinal fluid.
Conclusion: In the group of SM patients, there were intersexual differences in some correlations, probably caused in men by higher permeability of the blood-brain barrier, higher serum uric acid levels and subsequently higher total serum antioxidant capacity, and other factors, respectively. Serum uric acid levels could be a suitable biomarker for the activity of multiple sclerosis (Tab. 3, Ref. 18). Text in PDF www.lekarskyobzor.sk.
